Secret GardenField Guides
Hospitality is not just a service.
It is a form of stewardship.
At Misselthwaite Manor, we believe gatherings become more meaningful when people feel prepared, grounded, and gently guided into them. The Field Guides were created as an extension of that philosophy: part practical handbook, part ritual object, part invitation to host with greater intention.
Some guides are designed for guests planning an elopement weekend beneath the trees. Others will eventually support family reunions, seasonal suppers, retreats, baby showers, creative residencies, communal grief rituals, and celebrations we haven’t imagined yet.
They are not rigid rulebooks.
They are orientation tools.
Each guide is designed to reduce invisible labor, soften overwhelm, and help people focus less on logistics and more on the feeling they hope to create for their guests. We want hosts to spend less time frantically searching twenty browser tabs at midnight, and more time asking questions like:
How do we want people to feel when they arrive?
What moments will they remember years from now?
What would make this gathering feel nourishing instead of performative?
How do we create beauty without exhausting ourselves in the process?
The guides blend practical planning resources with our broader philosophy of hospitality: that environments shape behavior, that beauty regulates the nervous system, and that thoughtfully designed gatherings can help people feel more connected to themselves and to one another.
Inside each guide you’ll find:
a tactical framework for making decisions about your gathering
suggested timelines and planning checklists
hosting ideas based in environmental psychology
suggested gathering rhythms
etiquette and guest-management guidance
reflections on hospitality, ritual, and regenerative hosting
Some people will use these guides while planning an event at Misselthwaite Manor. Others may use them at home around their own dining tables, gardens, apartments, or community spaces.
When you gather at the Manor, the gathering is yours to host. Secret Garden Gatherings provides the space and the Field Guides to help you bring your vision to life; we are not the official hosts or event planners for gatherings held here.
But sometimes, a little more support is exactly what a gathering needs. When capacity allows, we may be able to work with Manor guests in a more hands-on capacity as co-hosts, helping with planning, facilitation, guest flow, or the gentle orchestration of the day itself. This can be especially useful for guests traveling from out of town who would like to spend less energy managing logistics and more time being present with their people.
Co-hosting support is available for an additional fee and is offered on a case-by-case basis. If you'd like to explore what that might look like for your gathering, please inquire.
We created the Field Guides because we believe modern life has left many people disconnected from the art of gathering well. Hosting has become either hyper-commercialized or strangely lonely. People are hungry for beauty, ritual, softness, and connection, but are often left without models for how to create those things sustainably.
These guides are our attempt to rebuild some of that lost knowledge in an accessible, atmospheric, deeply human way.
Take what serves you.
Adapt what doesn’t.
Leave room for your own traditions to emerge.
And above all: remember that people rarely remember whether the napkins matched.
They remember how they felt sitting next to you by the fire. ❤️🔥
